A feed from a website contains all the new contents in a standardized format that is readable by computers. To read a feed you can use a feed reader program or a feed reader website (like google reader or bloglines). This program is comparable to an email program. But instead of getting all you emails from all your different email addresses is gets all the different feeds from all the sites and displays the news items in one overview.
So to stay up-to-date you only have to check your feedreader program/ website once in a while instead of browsing to all the different websites. This saves you a lot of time and effort.
